Tip of the Week
Why am I not getting Air when I jump the wake?
This is the most common asked question. Answer: Are you edging into the wake (progressive edge) or you flatting out the board while riding the wake up?
More then likely you’re flatting out the board when hitting the wake. To fix this problem is more of a journey then technique. Why? old habits are hard to break.
- First, you have to get into a different mind set. “Your wake jumping ability needs work” Once you’ve gotten into this grove you can proceed with these new techniques.
- Second, start by cutting into the wake 2’ feet outside of the white wash line. This is the line the boat makes as it passes thru the water. Start to make your cut into the wake and ride the wake straight legged for the first 20 times. (this sounds basic, but this well help you to develop the no thought process that makes you now flatten out the board.) This process will allow you to feel the edge of the board digging into the wake. At this point you should feel the pop and get a little air and distance. Keep doing this and you will eventually clear the wake with no problem. All you need is time to get use to edging into the wake.
Are you thinking, "I’m too advanced for this, there’s got to be a better way." There probably is, but we haven’t found it. It took us a whole summer to perfect the progressive edge.
Jason Weber's "Wakeboarding on the Edge" does a great job of dissecting the progressive edge. We also recommend a progressive edge lesson before you start this phase. Trust us it will save you time/gas and eventually your sanity.
